There is/ are

Postby Keithlaw » Tue, 08 Dec 2009 10:39:58 -0500

Hi,

I have a question that I have been stuck on regarding "there is/ are". I hope someone could explain it to me.

Would you say:
a) There is an orange and some apples on the table; or
b) There are an orange and some apples on the table; or
c) None of the above?? Then what is the correct answer?

Thank you
Keithlaw

You would say: “There is an orange and some apples on the table”

Alternatives could be:

There are several pieces of fruit on the table: an orange and some apples
There is a lot of fruit on the table: an orange and some apples.

For example: There is a pen and some books on the table./ There are some books and a pen on the table. We need a learning tool and this English dictionary does help me a lot. :)

We use there is and there are to say that something exists.

Positive Sentences
We use there is for singular and there are for plural.
There is one table in the classroom.
There are three chairs in the classroom.
There is a spider in the bath.
There are many people at the bus stop.

Contractions
The contraction of there is is there's.
There's a good song on the radio.
There's only one chocolate left in the box.

There are nine cats on the roof.
There are only five weeks until Christmas.

Do you feel that editing english may not deserve the same amount of time as writing?
