Suggestion for Phonetics books etc. for ESL student

Postby Mr. K » Sat, 05 Jan 2008 08:51:37 -0500

Hi there:

My girlfriend is taking ESL classes and doing some self-studying at the same time. She wants to learn more about phonetics but her books and notes have about 1-2 pages at best on them. One of my earliest primary school memories was doing phonetics for a good week or so (or so I think).

Can anyone suggest good books or other resources on phonetics for ESL students?

Thanks in advance,
Chris

I really do recommend English Pronunciation in Use. My colleagues and I use it all the time in our classes - it explains phonetics while teaching pronunciation.

Best of luck to your girlfriend!

I like Cambridge's "English Phonetics and Phonology" third edition, it comes with audiocassettes and CD, you can find it easily in the net.
